The
system of counting the days is one of important aspects of the way of
life of the Lisu. This is incorporated into their daily lives, such as
determining the auspicious time to conduct ceremonies or rituals. This
system originated because in the past, Lisu did not have calendar and
they did not know the date. They could only use sunrise and sunset to
determine the days. Then, they standardised the day counting system by
using animal names to replace the names of each day. Each animal used
in naming the day has a legend and is of special importance for the
Lisu people.
